Episode notes

Life is better with a friend by our side! We need someone to laugh with us, cry with us, and just be with us. God is relational; he wants a friendship with us, not a religious performance. That means we can actually become great friends with God and never feel alone. Listen to this Scripture Playlist for Bible verses about how God is a friend to us and can help us build great friendships with people around us.

Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.

Exodus 33:11 NLT

The Lord is my best friend and my shepherd. I always have more than enough. [2] He offers a resting place for me in his luxurious love. His tracks take me to an oasis of peace near the quiet brook of bliss. [3] That’s where he restores and revives my life. He opens before me the right path and leads me along in his footsteps of righteousness so that I can bring honor to his name.

Psalm 23:1-3 TPT

The Lord sees all we do; he watches over his friends day and night. His godly ones receive the answers they seek whenever they cry out to him.

Psalm 34:15 TPT

Let them praise the name of GOD- it’s the only Name worth praising. His radiance exceeds anything in earth and sky; he’s built a monument-his very own people! Praise from all who love GOD! Israel’s children, intimate friends of GOD.

Psalm 148:13 MSG

“What I’m trying to do here is get you to relax, not be so preoccupied with getting so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep yourself in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Don’t be afraid of missing out. You’re my dearest friends! The Father wants to give you the very kingdom itself.

Luke 12:29-32 MSG

God will surely do this for you, for he always does just what he says, and he is the one who invited you into this wonderful friendship with his Son, even Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 1:9 (TLB)

“So this is my command: Love each other deeply, as much as I have loved you. [13] For the greatest love of all is a love that sacrifices all. And this great love is demonstrated when a person sacrifices his life for his friends. [14] “You show that you are my intimate friends when you obey all that I command you.

John 15:12-14 TPT
[15] I have never called you ‘servants,’ because a master doesn’t confide in his servants, and servants don’t always understand what the master is doing. But I call you my most intimate and cherished friends, for I reveal to you everything that I’ve heard from my Father.

John 15:15 TPT

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 18:24 ESV

A true friend loves regardless of the situation, and a real brother exists to share the tough times.

Proverbs 17:17 Voice

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? [36] (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.” ) [37] No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. [38] And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. [39] No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:35-39 NLT

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. [8] But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

1 John 4:7-8 NLT

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. [10] This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

1 John 4:9-10 NLT

Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. [12] No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.

1 John 4:11-12 NLT

Think about what we have in Christ: the encouragement he has brought us, the comfort of his love, our sharing in his Spirit, and the mercy and kindness he has shown us. If you enjoy these blessings, [2] then do what will make my joy complete: Agree with each other, and show your love for each other. Be united in your goals and in the way you think.

Philippians 2:1-2 ERV

Love overlooks the mistakes of others, but dwelling on the failures of others devastates friendships.

Proverbs 17:9 TPT

You are so intimately aware of me, Lord. You read my heart like an open book and you know all the words I’m about to speak before I even start a sentence! You know every step I will take before my journey even begins. [5] You’ve gone into my future to prepare the way, and in kindness you follow behind me to spare me from the harm of my past. With your hand of love upon my life, you impart a blessing to me.

Psalm 139:3,5 TPT
