Life’s challenges can lead us to doubt and fear, making it hard to see beyond our struggles. But God wants to use our pain, failures, and dreams for something greater—His purpose of saving lives. “Flipping the Switch” means transforming setbacks into steps toward fulfilling God’s greater plan for us.

What are your dreams really about? Are they focused on personal success or on making a difference in the lives of others? Have setbacks made it difficult for you to keep dreaming?

“Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the LORD tested Joseph’s character.”

Psalm 105:19 (NLT)

And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.

Genesis 45:5 (NIV)

The power of “flipping the switch”: God has a unique purpose for each of us—our lives are meant to impact others. But when faced with challenges, failure, and setbacks, it’s easy to give in to fear and doubt. “Flipping the switch” means learning to turn these challenges into opportunities for God’s greater purpose of saving lives.

Stop living small

Your lives aren’t small, but you’re living them in a small way. I’m speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live openly and expansively!

2 Corinthians 6:11-13 (MSG)

You weren’t made for small things. Living small often means living without purpose. As disciples, we’re called to live boldly and make a big impact.

What’s keeping you from living fully?

  • Fear: Fear can trap us in comfort zones, leading us to make decisions that limit our growth. Lot’s fear led him to choose a small town over the mountains God had prepared for him (Genesis 19:17-21).
  • Disappointment: Unmet dreams can weigh us down, but Proverbs 13:12 reminds us that when dreams are delayed, they can still fulfill us in the end.

Are you letting fear or disappointment hold you back? How can you rediscover your faith in God’s greater plan?

Answer the call

Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help. [12] When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior. ” [13] “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.”

Judges 6:6,12-13 (NIV)

When people cry out for help, God calls on us to answer. Gideon doubted his ability because of his past and weaknesses, but God assured him that He would provide the strength to fulfill his mission.

Are doubts about your past keeping you from answering God’s call to help others?

  • Insecurity: Often, feelings of inadequacy hold us back from fulfilling God’s purpose. But God sees us differently than we see ourselves.
  • God’s call: We’re called to share the truth with everyone—all people need to know His love (1 Timothy 2:4-7).

What can you do today to start answering God’s call?

Give your all

Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world-wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important-has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out-but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.

1 John 2:15-17 (MSG)

When we pursue personal dreams over God’s will, it squeezes out love for Him.

How can you begin to align your dreams with His desires?

  • Let go of worldly desires: What’s standing in the way of you fully committing to God’s plans for your life?
  • God’s dream: Acts 2:17 says that God’s Spirit empowers everyone—no matter their age or gender—to dream His dreams.

What steps can you take today to start living out God’s purpose?

Wrapping up: Living for a higher purpose

God wants us to live expansive, meaningful lives that help others. To fully embrace His purpose for us, we must be willing to confront our fears, doubts, and disappointments. By answering His call and giving our all, we step into a greater future—one where God’s dreams for the world come to life through us.
