No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, [14] I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Philippians 3:13-14 NLT
In this scripture, Paul talks about how he doesn’t let himself focus on the past but on what he can be moving forward. This often feels easier said than done. When we try to grow and change, it can be really easy to fixate on past mistakes and failures, and we often feel stuck in who we were. Though the new year is a great time to think about who we can be, this is difficult when we don’t feel like we can move past who we were before. Luckily, this isn’t how God sees us.
“Forget the things that happened in the past. Do not keep on thinking about them. [19] I am about to do something new. It is beginning to happen even now. Don’t you see it coming? I am going to make a way for you to go through the desert. I will make streams of water in the dry and empty land.
Isaiah 43:18-19 NIrV
God doesn’t keep thinking about our past mistakes, because he’s so focused on helping us become who we can be. He loves creating something new, and wants us to be a part of it. But we will never see this until we let go of the past and embrace a fresh start and new beginnings ourselves.
That’s where music can help us. Music speaks to the soul and helps us express parts of ourselves that are too deep for words. Through music, we can understand and express our sadness, anger, happiness, insecurity, and so much more. Through music, we can go from being stuck in our past, to seeing who we can become. When we say “new year, new me,” we can really mean it!
This playlist is meant to display the same progression David went through in the Psalms – starting with songs about feeling lonely, rejected, and afraid of being known, and progressing to seeing how God loves us for who we are and understands what we go through. Though this progression is meant to help you work through your emotions as you listen, you can listen to the playlist in whatever order you want – it is meant to help you work through, understand and express the emotions of your heart!
