For the agnostic, the skeptic, and the spiritually curious.

Adam slept with his wife again. She had a son whom she named Seth. She said, “God has given me another child in place of Abel whom Cain killed.” And then Seth had a son whom he named Enosh. That’s when men and women began praying and worshiping in the name of God.

Genesis 4:25-26 MSG

Prayer, like breathing, is reflexive. It’s not meant to function in our spiritual lives as a scheduled activity that we force ourselves to do; it’s meant to be as natural and constant as our next breath.

Genesis 4:25-26 records the moment this began. Humanity had just experienced its first murder. They had come up against their human limits—the terrifying realization that we will all face at some point: that much of life is beyond our control, that the forces at work in and outside of us exceed our capacity to master them.

That’s when people first began to pray. This collision with limitation created a reflex that still lives in us today: to seek out a power that is greater than us to match the forces that are greater against us.

Life makes us pray or harden. The same pressure that drove these first humans to call on God’s name can do the same for us. If we’ve never prayed before, we can let these four prayer starters guide us:

Perception — A prayer to change how you see

“God, if you are real, help me see what I cannot yet see.”

Process — A prayer to change how you think

“Loosen my assumptions long enough for me to wonder instead of dismiss.”

Purpose — A prayer to change what you live for

“If you created me, show me what my life is for—not what I have settled for.”

Path — A prayer to change where you are going

“Teach me how to begin calling on your name, even if all I can say today is, ‘Help me find you.’”

A song for your playlist:

Do You Believe” — PJ Morton & Yolanda Adams:
