“But when the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, He will testify and bear witness about Me.”

John 15:26 AMP

In John 15, Jesus gives God’s Spirit many names:

🤝 Helper
🫂 Comforter
📢 Advocate
🙏 Intercessor
👩‍⚕️ Counselor
💪 Strengthener

Wouldn’t you want someone like this in your corner? When we have a relationship with God, we do. The Spirit frees us from fear, forms us into new people, and brings us into God’s family.

In today’s Quick Quiet Time, we’ll break down many of the verses from Romans 8, where we learn who God’s Spirit is and how he helps and guides us.

Here’s what we’ll learn in this Quick Quiet Time:

  • The Spirit gives us freedom from sin and old patterns.
  • Spirit-led thinking brings peace, strength, and power.
  • The Spirit reassures us of our place in God’s family.

From Fear to Family 3

There’s no condemnation — we are free!

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. [2] For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. [3] For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, [4] so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:1-4 BSB

The point: God removes all condemnation from those who belong to Christ.

  • God’s Holy Spirit brings freedom from sin’s power and consequences.
  • When Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins, he accomplished what following rules could not—he broke sin’s control over us.
  • When we have a relationship with God, we now live by God’s Spirit, not by our old sinful nature.

 Metaphor moment

Having a relationship with Jesus is like stepping out of a courtroom where the judge declares, “Case dismissed,” and the chains fall off your wrists. You’re free!

Reflect:

  • Where have I been living as if I’m still condemned or defined by my past?

From Fear to Family 4

God’s Spirit gives a new mindset — life and peace.

Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. [6] The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, [7] because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. [8] Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.

Romans 8:5-8 BSB

The point: Our mindset reveals who is leading us—our flesh (which is also called our “self”) or the Spirit.

  • “Fleshly thinking” leads to spiritual death, worry, and distance from God.
  • “Spirit-led thinking” produces life, peace, and alignment with God.
  • The flesh cannot submit to God or please him.

Metaphor moment

Picking what drives our mindset is like tuning a radio: the flesh is noise; the Spirit is a clear, peaceful signal.

Reflect:

  • What kinds of thoughts have been dominating me lately—Spirit-led or self-led?

From Fear to Family 5

God’s Spirit gives life — it empowers us.

You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. [10] But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. [11] And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.

Romans 8:9-11 BSB

If you want favor with both God and man, and a reputation for good judgment and common sense, then trust the Lord completely; don’t ever trust yourself.

Proverbs 3:4-5 TLB

The point: The Spirit’s presence is the mark of belonging to Christ.

  • Believers are defined and led by the Spirit, not the flesh. Relying on the flesh means trusting our own human power.
  • Even when we are weak and tired or want to give up, God gives us life, energy, and motivation through his Spirit.
  • The same power that raised Jesus lives in us and renews us daily. We don’t have to rely on our flesh; God gives us the power to get through anything and everything.

Metaphor moment

Like having an engine inside us that never runs out, God’s resurrection power fuels our inner life.

Reflect:

  • In what areas do I need the Spirit to breathe life into what feels weak, tired, or discouraged?

From Fear to Family 6

God’s Spirit breaks patterns — We are not obligated to our old selves.

Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. [13] For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. [14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Romans 8:12-14 BSB

The point: Living by the flesh leads to spiritual death and emptiness, but the Spirit empowers us to put sinful patterns to death.

  • We owe nothing to our old sinful habits—they no longer own us.
  • Being Spirit-led is evidence of being God’s child.

Metaphor moment

Leaving our old life is like moving out of an old, broken-down house—we don’t have to go back and live there anymore.

Reflect:

  • What old pattern or urge do I need the Spirit’s help to say “no” to today?

From Fear to Family 7

God’s Spirit reassures us about being God’s child — adopted, secure, and loved.

For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” [16] The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. [17] And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Romans 8:15-17 BSB

The point: The Spirit confirms your identity as God’s child.

  • “Abba” in the Bible is a term of endearment for fathers — similar to “papa” or “daddy” that kids today might use. It signifies closeness and emotional attachment.
  • When we have a relationship with God, he becomes our “Abba” — we are adopted into God’s family with full intimacy.
  • As God’s children, we share in Christ’s inheritance, glory, and purpose.
  • The Spirit does not produce fear. He produces confidence and belonging.

Metaphor moment

Like welcoming someone into a warm home after standing outside in the cold, God brings us in, gives us a name, and calls us his own.

Reflect:

  • Where have I been acting like a slave to fear instead of a beloved child?

How to walk by the Spirit today

  • Choose one thought to replace.
    • Pick one negative thought you’ve been having. It could be anything that drags you down, like a fearful, guilty, or unbelieving thought. Swap it out for something true from Romans 8.Think about God’s freedom, peace, or the fact that you’re his child.
  • Say “no” once.
    • Pick one old pattern or urge you will refuse today—not by willpower, but by asking the Spirit for strength in the moment.
  • Follow one Spirit prompt.
    • Pay attention to a gentle nudge from God’s Spirit—telling you to encourage someone, choose patience, or be honest about something you feel guilty about, —and act on it.
  • End the day with gratitude.
    • Before bed, thank God for one moment where you sensed his Spirit leading you.

From Fear to Family 8

For further study of Romans 8

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? [32] Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? [35] Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? [37] No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. [38] And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. [39] No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:31-32,35,37-39 NLT

Key points:

  • God’s big proof (v. 32): God gave Jesus for us, and he won’t hold back the help we need now. When Jesus died on the cross for our sins, God showed he’ll take care of everything else in our lives.
  • Love isn’t blocked by hard times (v. 35): Stress, problems, and difficulties do not mean God stopped loving us. We can and should keep coming to him in the midst of them.
  • Nothing can break his hold (v. 38–39): No extreme—life or death, today or tomorrow, heaven or hell—can separate us from God’s love. Our safety is in his grip, not our strength.

Closing prayer

“Father, thank you for making me your child. Guide my thoughts, desires, and choices with your Holy Spirit today. Help me live in the freedom, peace, and love you give. Remind me throughout the day that I don’t walk alone, because you are with me in everything I face. Help me to remember that the Spirit frees me from fear, forms me into a new person, and brings me into God’s family. Amen.”
