Settle in
Take a deep breath. Turn off notifications on your phone. Ask God to help you choose your influences wisely and to surround you with people who help you grow closer to him.
Thought starter
We’re all being shaped—by the voices we follow, the people we date, and the circles we keep. The influence of each of these things isn’t neutral; it either pulls us closer to God or pushes us toward compromise.
Here’s what we’ll learn in this Quick Quiet Time:
- Our hearts are influenced and shaped by the voices we listen to most.
- Romantic relationships are one of our biggest influencers.
- We need to be intentional about our inner circle. It will either strengthen or soften our convictions.
Influence shapes our mood, mindset, and moves
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
But those who worship other gods will have many troubles…
Psalm 16:4 ERV
God tolerated man’s past ignorance about these things, but now he commands everyone to put away idols and worship only him.
Acts 17:30 TLB
So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.
1 Corinthians 10:14 NLT
The remote control metaphor
Think of your heart like a TV. Who is holding the remote?
- An idol is anyone or anything that influences our decisions more than God. It’s when we hand the remote control over to someone who shouldn’t have it.
- Influence is often invisible until it’s irreversible. The voices we listen to and things we watch will slowly shape the way we think.
The playlist metaphor
Influence is like our music playlist—what we keep on repeat starts to shape our mood, our mindset, and our moves.
Reflect:
- Who are the top three voices I listen to most—and are they helping me grow spiritually or pulling me away from God?
- Is there someone I follow (online or in real life) who’s influencing me in a way that doesn’t line up with God’s truth?

Our biggest influencers are often our romantic relationships.
As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods. He wasn’t committed to the LORD his God with all his heart as was his father David.
1 Kings 11:4 CEB
There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife.
1 Kings 21:25 NIV
It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality…
1 Thessalonians 4:3 NIV
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers [do not make mismated alliances with them or come under a different yoke with them, inconsistent with your faith]…
2 Corinthians 6:14 AMPC
Truth bomb:
Dating is more than romantic feelings. It shapes us spiritually.
- Even the kings in the Bible fell when they followed the wrong voice.
- The person we date will be part of our inner circle.
- Our inner circle is our future forecast. It influences how we think.
Reflect:
- When I think about dating, am I more focused on being liked or being godly?
- Am I dating someone who helps me love God more?
- Have I compromised in my dating relationships?
Our inner circle will either lead us to conviction or compromise.
Conviction is a strongly held belief that can’t be easily shaken. Compromise is the slow fade from conviction to convenience. It creeps into our lives in ways we don’t notice.
There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.
Proverbs 14:12 ESV
My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!
Proverbs 1:10 ESV
“But I have this against you: You let that woman Jezebel do what she wants. She says she is a prophet, but she is teaching my servants to sin. She leads them to commit sexual sins and to eat food that is offered to idols.”
Revelation 2:20 ESV
I’m not trying to get people to like me. I want God to accept me! Am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Galatians 1:10 ESV
If the godly give in to the wicked, it’s like polluting a fountain or muddying a spring.
Proverbs 25:26 ESV
Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.
Proverbs 13:20 ESV
Truth bomb:
Our circle influences our convictions. Compromise often starts with the company we keep.
- Not all compromise feels wrong at first, but it can lead to destruction.
- The Bible is full of people who didn’t fall in a moment; they drifted over time. They were often influenced by the people around them.
Write it down:
- Who’s in my inner circle—and are they sharpening or softening my convictions?
- Where have I allowed compromise to sneak into my life?
Closing prayer
“God, help me choose voices that echo your truth. Give me the courage to walk away from influences that dim my light. Show me where I’ve compromised, and lead me back to you.”
Humor break!
Why don’t bananas ever feel lonely? Because they all hang out in bunches.
