About the study

Settle in: Take a deep breath. Ask God to show you which people, habits, or voices are helping you, and which are hurting you. Then let him lead you toward honest, wise friendships that follow what the Bible teaches.

Scripture reflection

Read 1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV slowly.

Do not be misled: โ€œBad company corrupts good character.โ€

1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV

Then read it again in these different Bible translations. Let it sink in:

Don’t fool yourselves. Bad friends will destroy you.

1 Corinthians 15:33 CEV

Don’t be fooled: “Bad friends will ruin good habits.”

1 Corinthians 15:33 ERV

Thought starter

Friendship is not just about who you hang out withโ€”itโ€™s about what or whom you allow to influence your heart.

  • Bad influence says, โ€œEveryoneโ€™s doing it. Itโ€™s not that deep.โ€
  • Peer pressure says, โ€œIf you donโ€™t join in, youโ€™ll be left out.โ€
  • Compromise says, โ€œJust this once wonโ€™t hurt.โ€
  • But Jesus says, โ€œFollow me. Iโ€™ll lead you to life.โ€

Hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll learn in this Quick Quiet Time:

  • โ˜ ๏ธ Bad company poisons.
  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Good character protects.
  • ๐ŸŒŸ Godly influence transforms.
  • ๐Ÿšช Every relationship is a doorwayโ€”some lead to peace, others to pain.

The Friendship Filter 3

Who youโ€™re with = who you become

Read:

Spend time with the wise and you will become wise, but the friends of fools will suffer.

Proverbs 13:20 NCV

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wickedโ€ฆ but whose delight is in the law of the Lord.

Psalm 1:1-2 NIV

You should know that “just a little yeast works its way through the whole batch of dough.”

Galatians 5:9 NIrV

Truth bomb:

We become like the people we are around.

  • For example, if youโ€™re always around someone who is bitter, you can become tangled in their bitterness.
  • Choose your closest relationships carefullyโ€” they influence who you become.

Reflect:

  • Who am I letting shape my thoughts and choices?
  • Are there relationships pulling me away from Godโ€™s best?
  • What does โ€œgood companyโ€ look like in my life right now?

Write it down:

Write down one person who helps you grow in godly character.

The Friendship Filter 4

What you follow = who you become.

Read:

“Enter God’s kingdom through the narrow gate. The gate is large and the road is wide that leads to ruin. Many people go that way. [14] But the gate is small and the road is narrow that leads to life. Only a few people find it.โ€

Matthew 7:13-14 NIrV

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23 NIV

Truth bomb:

Popular opinions can be very wrong.

  • Jesus speaks of two pathsโ€”one wide and popular, the other narrow and challenging.
  • The crowd isnโ€™t always going the right way.
  • Bad influences distort your values and beliefs.
  • Those influences could be a toxic friend group, a bitter culture, or social media accounts that glorify violence and lies.
  • Your heart affects everything you do, so you need to protect it from bad influences.

Reflect:

  • What would change if I chose influences that build me up spiritually?
  • How can I guard my heart from other negative influences, like accounts on social media?

Write it down:

Write down one influence you need to step away from and one influence you can replace it with.

Final thought.

Choose your influences

Jesus calls us to love everyone, but having a โ€œfriendship filterโ€ means we carefully choose who will influence us. God calls us to be set apart, but not self-righteous. We need to be wise, but not judgmental; loving, but not easily led.
