Settle in
Take a deep breath. Turn off notifications on your phone. Ask God to help you learn how to use social media in a way that helps instead of hurts.
Scripture reflection:
Read 1 Corinthians 10:23 slowly. Then read it again:
You say, โI have the right to do anything.โ But not everything is helpful. Again you say, โI have the right to do anything.โ But not everything builds us up.
1 Corinthians 10:23 NIrV
Our phones can help us, or they can hurt us. Just because something is okay doesnโt mean itโs always good for us. We need to always check in on how we are using our phonesโif theyโre tearing us down or building us up.
Ask yourself: Is your phone a flashlight (helps you get through life) or a leash (holds you back and controls you)?
Thought starter
Social media is a tool. But like any tool, it can build or break. A hammer can construct a houseโor shatter a window. A phone can connect usโor control us. The question isnโt whether itโs good or bad. The question is how weโre using it.
Hereโs what weโll learn in this Quick Quiet Time:
- Envy, likes, and comparisons will leave us empty.
- Social media can be a great platform for good, if we choose to use it that way.
- God can give us โscroll control,โ so that we move mountains instead of being managed by metrics.
Donโt let likes become leashes.
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Galatians 1:10 NIV
Posts become performances when we use them to get approval and likes. For example โฆ.
- We check our phones not for connection, but for confirmation.
- Weโre not just scrollingโweโre searching for worth.
Hereโs the truth:
We donโt need a โlikeโ to know weโre loved. We already have Godโs heart.

Comparison is a crooked mirror.
I donโt dare to compare myself with those who praise themselves. Iโm not that kind of person. They measure themselves by themselves. They compare themselves with themselves. When they do that, they are not wise.
2 Corinthians 10:12 NIrV
Social media is a highlight reel, not a heart reveal.
- When we feel bad about ourselves based on other peopleโs social media posts, weโre comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone elseโs best angle.
Hereโs the truth:
God calls us by name. He cares about our real selves, not the face we post on social media.
Envy leaves us empty.
A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
Proverbs 14:30 NIV
He knew very well that the religious leaders had arrested Jesus out of envy.
Matthew 27:18 NLT
Truth bomb:
Envy is a corrosive force that poisons our souls.
- FOMO is often just envy in disguise. It’s the fear that someone else is living the life we think we deserve.
- Matthew 27 refers to Pontius Pilate, a governor who recognized that when the religious leaders brought Jesus to him to be killed, they were motivated by envy. The story is a powerful example of how envy can lead to devastating consequencesโit even led to the betrayal of the Son of God.
- Envy pulls us deep into the rabbit hole of worldliness, distorting our desires and distracting us from Godโs purpose.
- It blinds us to our blessings and steals our gratitude, making us resent what others have instead of rejoicing in what God has given.
Hereโs the truth:
God has a bigger purpose for us than just being better than someone else. We need to put our phones down and be grateful for what we do have rather than angry about what we donโt have.
Build, donโt break.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10 NIV
Truth bomb:
We each have a platformโour phones, our posts, and our voices. What we do with it matters.
- The Apostles didnโt have Instagram. They had letters. But they used what they had to build people up in faith. The medium has changed, but the mission hasnโt.
- A phone is an incredible tool. We can use it to build others up: encourage a friend, share truth, spread kindness.
- Orโฆ we can let it break usโtrapping us in comparison, envy, anxiety, and endless scrolling.
The โbreakingโ factor:
How constant social media use affects us
Letโs be realโsocial media can be hard to put down.
- 95% of teens ages 13-17 use social media.
- More than 1 in 3 say theyโre on it almost constantly
Thatโs a lot of time. And while it can be fun, it can also mess with our peace, focus, confidence, and conviction:
- Eating disorders: Studies show that frequent exposure to idealized body images on social media increases the risk of disordered eating behaviors, especially among teen girls.
- Pornography: Over 60% of teens report being exposed to explicit content online, often through social platforms.
- Mental health: Heavy social media use is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and sleep disruption in young adults.
- Comparison culture: 1 in 3 teens say social media makes them feel worse about their own lives.
So hereโs the challenge:
Donโt let your screen shape your soul. Use your platform to build, not break.
The algorithm vs. the Almighty
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1 NIV
Truth bomb:
We can be enslaved to our phones, but God has a better life in mind.
- Algorithms on social media always want our attention. God wants our affection. One is designed to keep us scrolling. The other is designed to set us free. One feeds our FOMO. The other fills our souls.
5 tips for scroll control
Our mind is not a landfill, and we should be careful what we put in it.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
Here are five tips that will help set us free when weโre enslaved to our phones.
1). Make a time-out rule.
๐ซ No scrolling the first or last hour of the day. This will focus your mind on the right things.
๐ฑ Use a โfocus modeโ to enforce it.
2). Break the leash.
๐ Turn off non-essential notifications.
๐ Keep notifications on only for time-sensitive messages, friends, and family members.
3). Create no-phone zones.
๐ต Create physical boundaries for digital peace.
๐ช Use your bedroom for rest. Use your kitchen table for connection with family or roommates. Donโt let your phone enter those sacred spaces.
4). Filter who you follow.
โ Unfollow what fuels envy, anxiety, or distraction.
โจ Keep what inspires, informs, or uplifts.
5). Scroll with intention.
โ Ask: โWhy am I opening this app?โ
โ ๏ธ If the answer is โJust to check,โ youโre one swipe from doomscrolling.
Mic drop moment
We werenโt made to be managed by metrics. We were made to move mountains. Letโs allow God to help us turn social media from a trap to a tool.
