“All men dream, but not equally.”

T.E. Lawrence, Seven Pillars of Wisdom

These words from T.E. Lawrence, a childhood hero of mine, capture something profound. But I want to take them in a slightly different direction: the inequality of our dreams is based on where those dreams come from.

Dreams that change the world for the better originate with God. Selfish visions meant to benefit one particular gender, race, ethnicity, country, or political ideology over others are not visions from God, and they do not change lives or the world for the better. They divide. They exclude. They build empires, not communities.

The Bible tells us of a man named Nehemiah who understood the difference. He was a man comfortable in the court of the king; as the cupbearer to Artaxerxes, he enjoyed a position of privilege and safety. Yet when Nehemiah heard that the walls were broken down and the gates burned with fire in his people’s home city of Jerusalem, something broke in him.

He could have stayed comfortable. He could have said, “That’s not my problem. I’m doing fine here in Persia.” Instead, he developed a vision more important than his comfort and left that comfort to pursue it.

And it all began with prayer. Not prayers for greatness, importance, or success, but prayers of brokenness about the spiritual condition of his people and country.

Now it came about when I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying [constantly] before the God of heaven.

Nehemiah 1:4 AMP

Nehemiah’s prayer wasn’t “God, make me great.” It was “God, my heart is broken for what breaks yours.” That’s where God-originated vision begins—not in ambition, but in humility; not in asking What do I want? But what does God need? What do those I love need? What, like Nehemiah, can’t I stop caring about?

After months of prayer (Nehemiah 1:1-4; 2:1-4), Nehemiah received permission from the king to travel to Jerusalem. He renewed the discouraged builders with prayer-infused, God-centered vision:

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.

Nehemiah 2:17-18 NIV

Nehemiah’s God-centered vision inspired others to do the work God called them to do, and that should be the end of the story. But vision never unfolds that smoothly. Opposition came fast. Adversaries named Sanballat and Tobiah mocked them. Enemies plotted against them. The work became overwhelming.

But here’s what made the difference: Nehemiah kept praying through it all. He prayed when they mocked. He prayed when they threatened. He prayed when workers grew weary. Prayer sustained the vision through every setback. And in just 52 days, the impossible became reality:

So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

Nehemiah 6:15-16 NIV

And here is where we learn the priceless lesson: “This work had been done with the help of our God.” Vision that originates with God is sustained by God. Vision begins in prayer, and it is through prayer that vision survives opposition, exhaustion, and discouragement.

If you’re a dreamer, builder, or creator wondering if your vision is from God, ask yourself these questions: Does it break your heart before it inspires your ambition? Does it benefit others, not just yourself? Does it require God’s help to accomplish? If the answer to all these questions is yes, then pray the visionary’s prayer and watch God give you the courage to build what he’s placed on your heart.

Perception — Change how you see

“God, help me see the difference between vision that originates with you and ambition that originates with me. Show me what breaks your heart so it can break mine.”

Process — Change how you think

“God, transform the way I process vision. Teach me to think about my dreams spiritually by asking these questions: Does this please you? Does this advance your purposes, not just my own? Do I trust you with my life enough to give up comfort for the conviction to build your kingdom, not just mine?

“Help me understand and believe that a beautiful life is lived in alignment with your will, not in independence from it. Help me evaluate my vision with a heart of spiritual surrender, not pragmatic calculation.”

Purpose — Change what you live for

“God, purify my motives. Show me when my dreams are really about making my name great instead of making your name known. Help me examine my heart to ensure I am not hardening to your calling with apathy, neglect, and a resistance to being broken by the pain I see around me. Teach me to care more about who gets helped and what gets built than my personal comfort or who gets credit. Let humility and compassion, not ambition, be the fuel that drives me forward.”

Path — Change where you are going

“God, lead me on the path where prayer reveals and sustains vision. Give me Nehemiah’s heart—broken before it’s inspired and prayerful before taking action. Show me the next step: when to wait, when to move, when to speak, and when to build. Help me persevere when opposition comes, when people mock, or when the work feels overwhelming. Lead me to build what you’ve placed on my heart, confident that what’s done with your help will accomplish what you intend. And when it’s complete, let the message be clear: this was done with the help of God.”
