The Doubter’s Prayer

For those who want faith but don't have it yet.

Jesus doesn’t condemn doubt; he addresses it. When Thomas refused to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he could see and touch the wounds, Jesus didn’t reject him. He showed up and said, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” (John 20:27)

Jesus met Thomas in his doubt. He will meet us in ours, too.

In Mark 11, Jesus explains how faith works and what blocks it:

“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Mark 11:22–24 NIV

Doubt is part of developing faith. We either indulge it and become more doubtful, or we pray through it and strengthen our faith. Prayer is how we conquer doubt—not by pretending it doesn’t exist, but by bringing it honestly to God.

When we pray, God leads us to the biblical evidence we need. Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes from hearing the message—and that message is found in the word about Christ. God also makes us attentive to lessons learned through experience and brings people into our lives who can help us navigate our doubts.

In the next few verses of Mark 11, Jesus adds something that will reveal how much we are addressing and conquering our doubts:

“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

Mark 11:25–26 NIV

We’ll know we’re dealing with our doubt effectively when our capacity to forgive grows. Forgiveness is evidence that faith is taking root—that we’re beginning to trust God with what we can’t control, including the people who’ve hurt us.

So don’t be afraid of your doubts. Deal with them through prayer and watch your faith grow.

Perception — A prayer to change how you see

“God, help me see that doubt is not the opposite of faith—it’s often the beginning of it. Show me that you don’t reject honest questions and that you’re not threatened by my uncertainty. Let me see doubt not as a spiritual weakness but as an opportunity to deepen my relationship with you.”

Process — A prayer to change how you think

“God, transform the way I think about obstacles and impossibilities. Help me process my mountains—the overwhelming circumstances, the relationships that feel beyond repair, and the problems that seem immovable—by believing in your power rather than focusing on my limitations.”

Purpose — A prayer to change what you live for

“God, help me understand that as my faith grows, so does my capacity to forgive. Show me that forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts I can possess. It frees others from guilt and regret, and it frees me from bitterness that blocks faith.”

Path — A prayer to change where I am going

“God, lead me to doubt honestly, pray boldly, and trust more deeply. Give me the courage to believe instead of doubt, pray instead of quit, and move mountains rather than be crushed by them.”

A song for your playlist:

“Peace” by Michael W. Smith and Michael McDonald

Lyric highlight:

“I have come from so far away
Down the road of my own mistakes
In the hope you could hear me pray
Oh Lord, keep me in Your reach.

Oh wondrous child of whom the Angels sing,
Know my joy, feel my suffering
Shining star, make this love you bring
So bright that I may believe.
