Settle in: Take a deep breath. Turn off notifications on your phone if you can. Ask God to unmask anything hidden inside you—any fear, shame, or pride that tempts you to twist the truth—and help you embrace honesty.
Scripture reflection
Read the following passage slowly:
The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.
Proverbs 12:22 NLT
Thought starter
…For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Matthew 12:34 NIV
Our words and actions show what’s really going on inside our hearts. We can lie to protect ourselves, but lies don’t stay hidden—they leak out. God hears our hearts and motives, not just the words we say or behaviors we do.
- Lies whisper, “No one will know.”
- Fear insists, “If I tell the truth, I’ll lose something.”
- Shame says, “Hide it. Cover it up.”
But Jesus says, “I am the truth, and the truth brings freedom.”
Here’s what you’ll learn in this Quick Quiet Time:
- Lies entangle
- Truth frees
- Healing comes when we take off our mask and are honest.
- Dishonesty breaks trust, but truth builds it.
Lies keep us stuck. Truth sets us free.
Read:
So you must stop telling lies. Tell each other the truth, because we all belong to each other in the same body.
Ephesians 4:25 NCV
“Then you will know the truth. And the truth will set you free.”
John 8:32 NIrV
Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!
Psalm 34:13 NLT
Truth bomb:
Honesty brings closeness. Deceit makes us distant.
- Truth has spiritual power. It’s not about reporting facts; it’s about finding freedom.
- God wants to set us free when we feel stuck, but he can only do it when we embrace truth.
- Lies may protect us temporarily, but they poison us eventually.
Reflect:
- How has dishonesty affected my relationships?
Write it down:
- Write one way you’ve seen dishonesty affect your relationships and how honesty might help make them grow.

Bible examples: Ananias and Sapphira vs. David
Before continuing, read these passages about two people who lied and one who was truthful. Circle, underline, or highlight any words that stand out to you: Acts 5:1-11 NCV, Psalm 32:1-6 ERV
Read:
Peter said, “Ananias, why did you let Satan rule your thoughts to lie to the Holy Spirit … Why did you think of doing this? You lied to God, not to us!“
Acts 5:3-4 NCV
Mic drop moment:
A couple in the early church lied about their offering, pretending to give more than they did. Their deception led to serious consequences.
- This story reminds us that God takes lying very seriously.
- Lying is often rooted in fear, pride, or insecurity.
- But truth invites healing, humility, and trust.
Lord, I prayed to you again and again, but I did not talk about my sins. So I only became weaker and more miserable… [5] But then I decided to confess my sins to the LORD. I stopped hiding my guilt and told you about my sins. And you forgave them all!
Psalm 32:3, 5 ERV
Truth bomb:
God isn’t looking for perfection. He’s looking for honesty.
- David approached things differently than Ananias and Sapphira.
- He thought honesty was more important than looking good.
- When David wasn’t honest, he was miserable. When he was honest, he was free, healed, and happy.
Reflect:
- Is there a lie I’ve told that I need to confess?
- What fear is keeping me from being honest?
- What would change if I chose truth today?
Write it down:
- Write down one area where you want to grow in honesty.
- Write down one truth you need to speak, even if it’s hard.

Final thought.
Honesty sets us free.
Lying might feel like the right choice in the moment, but it ultimately leads to more pain and distance. Honesty sets us free and brings us closer to God and other people. Whatever you’re afraid to be honest about, choose to tell the truth today, trusting that it makes God happy.
