Thought starter

You know that feeling when you just don’t know how to pray? Like your words are hitting the ceiling?

Jesus gives us the master key to prayer in Matthew 6:9-13, a passage often called “The Lord’s Prayer.” This isn’t a poem to recite; it’s a blueprint for bold, honest conversations with God. It moves from big-picture surrender to detailed daily needs, ending with a request for protection from the things that keep tripping us up.

Jesus teaches us that prayer is a spiritual conversation that includes connection, surrender, and transformation.

Here’s what we’ll learn in this Quick Quiet Time:

  • Jesus teaches us to pray specific prayers for our challenges and needs, which include forgiveness and protection.
  • There are many more examples in the Bible of people who prayed honest prayers that we can learn from.
The Jesus Way To Pray 3

How should we pray?

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. [10] Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13 KJV

“Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father, who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. [10] Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors [letting go of both the wrong and the resentment]. [13] And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]’

Matthew 6:9-13 AMP

Let’s do a line-by-line breakdown of this prayer blueprint. What is Jesus telling us to talk to God about?

 “Thy kingdom come.”

  • This represents the church and God’s Kingdom on earth.
  • It’s a call for divine presence and justice here and now.

“Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

  • This is a surrender to God’s plan, even when life feels chaotic.
  • It’s a reminder to live with purpose, compassion, and courage.

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

  • This is a request for daily essentials—which might include food, safety, and emotional strength.
  • God meets our needs daily.

Prayer challenge for anyone struggling: “Help me through today’s challenges.”

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

  • “Debts” = our wrongs, mistakes, sinful, selfish choices.
  • This is a call to receive forgiveness and extend it to others.
  • It’s a challenge to release resentment and embrace healing.
  • It’s also a time to reflect on whether or not we have forgiven others—to see if there is any resentment, bitterness, or grudges we are hanging on to.

Forgiveness prayer challenge: There is a link between the debts we need forgiven and the debts we need to forgive. Is there an old grudge, resentment, or bitterness we’re still carrying? That heavy weight does not serve us. Take 60 seconds right now to pray for the person who hurt you and consciously choose to hand that grudge over to God.

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

  • This is a plea for protection from destructive choices and spiritual forces of evil.
  • It’s a recognition that we need divine help to navigate darkness.

Prayer challenge for me or someone I know needing protection: “Put a forcefield around me today and help me spot the traps before I fall into them. Protect my mind, my heart, and my path.”

Scripture highlight for God protecting us from temptation: 2 Timothy 4:18 NIV The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Example of heartfelt prayers

1. Jesus surrendering his will:

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Luke 23:46 NIV

And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

Luke 22:44 NIV

He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

Matthew 26:39 NLT

Jesus’s prayer life wasn’t always serene or poetic. Sometimes, it was raw, desperate, and soaked in agony.

  • Luke 22:44 tells us he prayed so intensely that he sweat drops of blood.
  • Jesus’s prayers were full of honest surrender, not fake religious performance, and they give us permission to be just as real.

When we’ve run out of words, when the weight is too much to carry, we need to remember his final act of trust. He surrendered himself to God even in the midst of his suffering, while he was dying on the cross.

Reflect and respond: What’s the one area of your life where your grip is the tightest—where surrender feels the hardest? What would it mean to loosen your hold and pray, “Not my will, but yours be done”? Write down that area. Then write one sentence of surrender.

2. Hannah pouring out her heart:

…But I am very discouraged, and I was pouring out my heart to the LORD.

1 Samuel 1:15 NLT

Hannah felt deep anguish and sorrow over not being able to have children. For a long time, she kept this pain to herself. But, in 1 Samuel 1, she finally decided to pour out all her emotions to God, and this made all the difference.

Reflect and respond: What is discouraging you today? What have you been pretending is okay? Take ten minutes to pray with no filter about that topic until you’ve fully poured your heart out to God, and discover that he’s right there with healing and understanding.

3. David confessing and repenting of sin:

This psalm is an honest cry for mercy and restoration. If we’re looking to “fix” or deepen our connection to God, Psalm 51 has verses to meditate on:

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.

Psalm 51:1 NLT

Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.

Psalm 51:2 NLT

Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.

Psalm 51:11 NLT

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.

Psalm 51:12 NLT

Reflect and respond: What shame or guilt is weighing on you today? Have a “David” prayer and tell God the sins and guilt that are keeping you stuck. Ask him for forgiveness and love, and tell him how you want to change.

4. Job responding to loss:

Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship. [21] He said, “I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The LORD gave me what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD!” [22] In all of this, Job did not sin by blaming God.

Job 1:20-22 NLT

Job went through incredible loss, grief, and pain. He lost his children and experienced significant health problems. Instead of getting bitter, blaming God, or suppressing his feelings, he took his pain to God in prayer.

Reflect:

  • How do you handle your pain? Do you blame? Get mad? Suppress? Ignore? Or do you express it to God?

Respond:

Tell God what is causing you pain today, and find scriptures like this one to help you hold onto hope.
