“Be strong. Be brave. Don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope. The king of Assyria has a huge army with him. But there’s a greater power with us than there is with him.”

2 Chronicles 32:7 NIrV

Runners call it “hitting the wall”—that moment in a race when their legs have gone as far as they can go. No matter how strong the runner’s willpower is, they are physically unable to take another step forward.

We hit limits too—battles and problems that feel impossible to overcome, much like the Israelites facing the king of Assyria and his huge army in 2 Chronicles 32:7. No matter how strong our willpower is, some struggles in life just seem insurmountable.

Hitting the wall is frustrating. There’s no greater feeling of desperation and panic than the realization that we’re in a situation we can’t see a way out of, surrounded by a huge army of problems greater than we can solve. Most of us would do anything we can to avoid that feeling of powerlessness; we get controlling, we blame other people for our problems, we get defensive and angry, we deny that our problems exist, we settle for less, and we put on masks to tell ourselves and others that we’re okay when we’re not.

But God sees those moments of powerlessness much differently than we do. He sees them as the place where he can meet us most powerfully.

He said, “This is the message from the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Your help will not come from your own strength and power. No, your help will come from my Spirit.‘ This is what the LORD All-Powerful says.

Zechariah 4:6 ERV

The solution for a runner who has hit the wall is fuel; their muscles have literally run out of glucose. For us, the solution is simple too. It’s humility: admitting that our strength and power have run out, and that we need God to reach the next level in our race.

But he answered me, “My grace is always more than enough for you, and my power finds its full expression through your weakness.” So I will celebrate my weaknesses, for when I’m weak I sense more deeply the mighty power of Christ living in me. [10] So I’m not defeated by my weakness, but delighted! For when I feel my weakness and endure mistreatment—when I’m surrounded with troubles on every side and face persecution because of my love for Christ—I am made yet stronger. For my weakness becomes a portal to God’s power.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 TPT

When we walk with God, we don’t have to be defeated by our weaknesses. He is happy to make us stronger in our moments of weakness, empowering us to conquer our human limits rather than being conquered by them.

Take our new quiz and learn how to power up spiritually

Last week, we sent you a quiz to help you discover your spiritual superpower. This week, we made a new quiz to help you learn how to develop it.

In our Chemistry Lab series, “The Psychology of Walking with God,” we learned that God’s transformative power is available to us and can transform the deepest parts of who we are. It helps us win internal battles and conquer external obstacles. Over the course of three interactive Lab Experiments, we learned how to superpower our lives on the deepest level:

  • Lab Experiment #1 taught us to have the courage to understand ourselves
  • Lab Experiment #2 taught us what it feels like to rely on God, and
  • Lab Experiment #3 taught us how to let God superpower our lives so that we don’t just survive storms but conquer them.

Which of these lab experiments would help you most to find spiritual power today? Do you need the courage to unmask and be authentic about your struggles? Are you exhausted from self-reliance? Are you ready to admit your weaknesses and experience God’s power?

Take our quiz to find out where to start!

You need to refuel.

It is the most amazing feeling to know how deeply You know me, inside and out; the realization of it is so great that I cannot comprehend it.

Psalm 139:6 Voice

Just as a runner needs to recognize when it’s time to slow down, rest, and refuel, we need to recognize when we’re running on empty spiritually. This requires having a deep understanding of our needs, feelings, thoughts, and desires. It requires letting go of distractions so we can recognize what’s underneath the surface.

This kind of reflection can be uncomfortable and even difficult. Our inner lives are often filled with noise that makes it hard to understand ourselves. Luckily, God knows us deeply, inside and out. When we quiet the noise in our lives, his voice pierces through and helps us discover the parts of ourselves we’ve been afraid to see. He helps us refuel with what we really need, rather than with spiritual junk food that has short-term appeal but doesn’t actually fill us up.

If you need to refuel, we’ve got you covered. Follow this two-week plan to begin your journey toward understanding yourself and hearing God’s whisper through the noise.

Here’s a two-week plan for refueling your empty tank:

Week 1

  • Read the introduction of the Lab Experiment “What God Whispers in Your Ear” to get the courage to discover yourself and hear God’s whisper through the noise.
  • Do a heart check. Follow this guide to reflect on where your heart is right now regarding listening for God’s whisper about who you are.
  • Self-evaluate and discover your “one thing.” Answer these questions to help you understand yourself better, recognize the distractions you use when self-reflection gets uncomfortable, and figure out what one thing you would change to honestly understand yourself.
  • Make a relationship connection. Meet with a spiritual friend (or “discovery partner”) and use this guide to discuss what you’ve found so far, and ask what they see. Decide together that you will help each other slow down, be honest, refuel, and listen for God’s voice.

Week 2

  • Follow this 7-day plan together with your discovery partner.
  • At the end of the week, reflect and evaluate how you did. Do you feel more refueled? Do you understand yourself better?

You need to stretch your faith.

… We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. [9] In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.

2 Corinthians 1:8-9 NLT

When runners go a long time without stretching, their bodies start to break down. They cramp, get sore, and even risk injury in times of exertion. The same is true for our spiritual lives. The further we try to go relying on ourselves instead of stretching our faith in God, the harder the journey becomes. We need to stretch our faith and shift who we are relying on if we want to keep moving forward.

2 Corinthians 1 tells us this is something we need to learn to do; it’s not something that comes naturally. Thankfully, God can teach us how to rely on him. We just have to admit that we need his help.

If you need to stretch your faith, we’ve got you covered. Follow this two-week plan to begin your journey toward admitting you’re not okay, dropping your mask, and relying on God and his strength.

Here’s a two-week plan for stretching your faith:

Week 1

  • Read the introduction of the Lab Experiment “What it feels like to rely on God” to learn how to develop the courage to admit when you’re not okay.
  • Do a heart check. Follow this guide to take the time to reflect on where your heart is right now regarding letting God help you with what’s hard.
  • Self-evaluate and discover your “one thing.” Answer these questions to understand what masks you use to hide your struggles, recognize self-reliance in your life, and learn how to take your emotions to God. You’ll also discover one main thing you’ve been trying to handle alone so you can start to handle it with God.
  • Make a relationship connection. Meet with a spiritual friend (or “discovery partner”) and use this guide to discuss what you’ve found so far. Ask what they see, and decide together that you will help each other practice God-reliance instead of self-reliance.

Week 2

  • Follow this 7-day plan together with your discovery partner.
  • At the end of the week, reflect and evaluate how you did. How did your week go when you practiced God-reliance instead of self-reliance? How did God show up for you? What do you need to keep bringing to God moving forward?

You need to start running!

God’s power has given us everything we need to lead a godly life. All of this has come to us because we know the God who chose us. He chose us because of his own glory and goodness.

2 Peter 1:3 NIrV

We might have the right running shoes, watch all the running tip videos, and stretch our muscles for days, but we’re not a true runner until we start running. The same is true spiritually. It’s great to learn awesome spiritual insights, but true power comes when we step out on faith and put what we learn into practice.

God has the power we need. He can give us spiritual superpowers to change or accomplish anything—we just need the humility to lower our walls and embrace his power, stepping out with the faith that God will come through.

If you need to start running down the path God has for you, we’ve got you covered. Follow this two-week plan to begin your journey toward lowering your walls, discovering your superpowers, and letting God’s power transform your life.

Here’s a two-week plan to start running:

Week 2

  • Follow this 7-day plan together with your discovery partner.
  • At the end of the week, reflect and evaluate how you did. How did you see the superpowers you practiced show up in your life? What changes now that you know what it feels like to access God’s superpowers instead of relying on your own strength?
