Settle in

Take a deep breath. Turn off notifications on your phone. Ask God to rescue you in any areas where you feel stuck.

Thought starter

When we get stuck—in fear, pain, or even a problem we caused ourselves—God is always ready to rescue us. And our rescue isn’t just for ourselves; when God rescues us, we give other people hope that he’ll rescue them too.

Here’s what we’ll learn in this Quick Quiet Time:

  • God saves us even when we hesitate in fear.
  • God saves us even when we’re stuck in darkness.
  • God saves us for a reason; he rescues us so we can rescue others.

God Saves! 3

The “forward” rescue: God saves by getting us unstuck.

When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them.

Genesis 19:16 NIV

Truth bomb:

Sometimes, the hardest part of being rescued isn’t the danger —it’s our hesitation.

  • This verse tells us of a man named Lot who hesitated to flee the doomed city of Sodom. The angels helping him didn’t wait. They grabbed his hand and pulled him forward. That’s mercy in motion.
  • Fear can freeze us in the familiar, but God doesn’t leave us stuck. God’s mercy doesn’t wait for us to get it all together. It reaches in, grabs our hand, and leads us out.
  • God’s rescue isn’t always neat or comfortable. It’s often messy, unpredictable, and full of detours. But it’s always full of love, purpose, and power. His salvation doesn’t follow our script—it rewrites it.

Bonus scriptures on moving forward

The righteous keep moving forward, and those with clean hands become stronger and stronger.

Job 17:9 NLT

Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:62 NIV

It is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” (Genesis 17:5) God considers Abraham to be our father. The God that Abraham believed in gives life to the dead. Abraham’s God also creates things that did not exist before.

Romans 4:17 NIrV

Truth bomb:

If God can bring life where there was none, he can save us—no matter how far gone we think we are.

  • God is the one who calls things that are not as though they were. His power can save, restore, and resurrect what seems lost.
  • So let’s not get stuck in the past. Let’s move forward.

Reflect:

  • The “Lot” questions: Where am I hesitating to let God rescue me? Is there a “familiar” place (a habit, a grudge, or a comfort zone) that God is trying to pull me away from?
  • What is one “forward step” I can take this week?

God Saves! 4

The “fire rescue”: God saves in the darkness.

When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.

Romans 5:6 NLT

Save others by pulling them out of the fire. To others, show mercy mixed with fear of sin. Hate even the clothes that are stained by the sins of those who wear them.

Jude 1:23 NIrV

When you look for me with all your heart, you will find me.

Jeremiah 29:13 NIrV

The bottom line:

Like a firefighter bursting through flames, Jesus didn’t wait for the world to be safe or sanitized before he came to help.

  • He stepped into the dark smoke and chaos to save us.
  • God does this for us every day. God doesn’t wait for the smoke to clear. He saves us right where we are—in our emptiness, confusion, and pain.
  • God is always ready to be found.
God Saves! 5

The “with-you rescue”: God stays in the fire with us.

So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, securely tied, fell into the roaring flames. [24] But suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, “Didn’t we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?” “Yes, Your Majesty, we certainly did,” they replied. [25] “Look!” Nebuchadnezzar shouted. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!” [28] Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him. They defied the king’s command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

Daniel 3:23-25,28 NLT

The bottom line:

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into a furnace for refusing to bow to an idol. But they weren’t alone.

  • A fourth figure—God’s presence—was with them in the fire.
  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn’t get a promise that the fire wouldn’t be hot—just that they wouldn’t be alone.
  • God not only rescued them but also stayed with them.

Reflect:

  • Am I looking at the flames or the “fourth man” (God)?
  • In my current “furnace,” am I focusing more on the heat or the presence of the one standing with me?
God Saves! 6

The “human rescue”: God saves through people

Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to die; save them as they stagger to their death.

Proverbs 24:11 NLT

Lightbulb moment:

Firefighters don’t work alone. They move in teams. And God’s rescue plan often includes human hands.

  • Throughout the Bible, God works through people who are willing to get close to the heat.

Before continuing, read this passage about a story in the Bible where God saved someone through their friends. Circle, underline, or highlight any words that stand out to you: Mark 2:1-12.

They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. [5] Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”

Mark 2:4-5 NLT

The backstory: Four friends brought a paralyzed man to Jesus.

  • Because Jesus was in a crowded house, they removed part of the roof and lowered their friend down to be right in front of them. Jesus, moved by their faith, forgave and healed their friend.
  • In the same way, God uses spiritual friends to save us. He also uses us to rescue our friends.

The bottom line:

If God has rescued us, we’ve been drafted. We’re not just survivors—we’re part of the rescue crew now. We carry the oxygen someone else needs.

God Saves! 7

God rescues us for a reason.

But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. [5] Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. [6] She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. [10] When the child grew older, [his sister] took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

Exodus 2:3,5-6,10 NIV

Truth bomb:

Moses’s name was a reminder that God rescues for a reason.

  • Moses was a baby in a basket who later became the leader of a nation.
  • He was saved in the mess, and he was saved for a mission.
  • Rescue is never the end of the story. It’s the beginning. We were drawn out of fear, out of shame, out of the fire to carry hope. To carry purpose. To carry someone else.

Reflect:

  • What have I been rescued from?
  • Who helped carry me?
  • What mission am I being prepared for?

God Saves! 8

Practical ways to rescue others this week

  • The “empty chair” rescue: Text someone you haven’t seen in a while. A simple “thinking of you” can be a lifeline.
  • The “listening” rescue: Sit with someone in their mess. Don’t fix. Don’t judge. Just stay. Just listen.
  • The “bridge” rescue: Offer to pray or read Scripture with someone searching. Be the bridge between their “nothing” and God’s “something.”
  • The “Bible” rescue: Encourage someone to return to God’s Word. Share a devotional, a verse, or a Bible study.
  • The “prayer walk” rescue: Go on a prayer walk with a friend. Talk to God together.
  • The “hang-out” rescue: Just be present. Watch a movie, cook a meal, go shopping, hike, or have a game night. Hang out!

God Saves! 9

Final scripture and thoughts

This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the LORD. [6] That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. [7] “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. [8] They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:5-8 NIV

Reminder: When our eyes are fixed on the wrong thing, we can miss the blessings God is sending.

  • This verse paints the picture of someone who relies on human strength versus trusting God.
  • Sometimes, we don’t even recognize his rescue when it arrives because fear, pride, or disappointment have clouded our vision. We might be relying on ourselves or other people to rescue us.
  • On the other hand, when we rely on God to rescue us, we can be strong even when hard times come.

From Lot to Moses, from a fiery furnace to a crowded house—every story points to one truth:

God saves!!

  • And he stays with us in the middle of the trouble.
  • He saves in the fire.
  • He saves in the hesitation.
  • He saves through people.

God’s rescue is personal and relentless. He finds us in the fire, in the silence, and in the hesitation. But we aren’t just saved for our own sakes—we are rescued for a reason. We are “drawn out” of our darkest moments to become a lifeline for someone else. Our survival is proof that hope exists. Now, let’s go carry that faith to those still waiting for a hand to grab.
